This article will talk of the original and first book written, simply called The Foxfire Book. Respecting nature with all it has to offer to sustain our lives through honest work. Anytime you get old timers together with young people willing to learn there is a sparkle in their eyes and that to me is worth more than anything else we can share. It is a good one to read first because it will give you the back ground of what Foxfire is all about. The journey over the first 25 years is the basis for this particular book in the series and although there are interviews with the old timers ranging from story telling to how to make various things in the kitchen this one is mostly about the journey. ![]() You can read how Foxfire came to be, the process, some of the headaches in the start up, as well as the students perspectives. Originally started in 1968 by high school teacher Eliot Wigginton, Foxfire was created as an attempt to entice young high school students to learn the history. ![]() ![]() In it you will find things not found in our history books but very rich history passed from those who have made these mountains their home, for some it has been many generations. This all started as a project with one teacher taking his students into the Appalachian Mountains to document traditions, methods, and experiences of the older generations retold by students.
